Porsche charges cable-free: Inductive charging for the Cayenne Electric

Label: this content was created with AI

Park, brake, charge — done. With the Cayenne Electric, Porsche is bringing the first cable-free charging option of this scale to market: up to 11 kW of power travel through a magnetic field from the floor plate in the garage into the battery — with around 90 % efficiency despite an air gap of 12–18 centimeters.

On September 16, 2026, Porsche made "Porsche Wireless Charging" available for the SUV as part of the model-year change. All components are now orderable in Germany and other European markets immediately — the global rollout is happening in stages.

What is the system made of?

Unlike earlier inductive charging systems, the Cayenne Electric needs no separate wallbox or controller: the technology is installed in a one-box floor plate (117 × 78 × 6 cm, around 50 kilograms) that you simply connect to the power supply. In addition, there are two vehicle-side components:

Floor plate

Weatherproof and installable outdoors — in the garage, carport or on the parking space. With a WLAN and LTE module for remote updates.

Receiving unit in the vehicle

Protected against stone impact and weather, installed under the floor between the front wheels — available as a wireless-charging retrofit option.

My Porsche App

Track charging sessions, authenticate multiple vehicles, comfort features such as timer charging with preconditioning — all handled digitally.

How is the charging session started?

Before the first energy transfer, the vehicle and the floor plate exchange their data once — including the password. This protects your parking space from unauthorized charging. After that, the WLAN module takes over: on approach it recognizes the Cayenne, and the green receiver dot plus coil circle appears in the PCM display as a positioning aid — directly within the "Surround View" parking function.

  • Automatic ride-lowering: the Cayenne Electric lowers itself automatically on approach to minimize the distance between floor plate and ground.
  • Charging start: engage the parking brake — done. Comfort features familiar from AC charging, such as timer charging with preconditioning, are also available when charging wirelessly.
  • Tolerance: the software checks the offset between transmitting and receiving coil and continuously adjusts the charging parameters — up to 10 centimeters of offset are easily handled.

The key figures

Core values of the Porsche Wireless Charging system
Parameter Value
Maximum inductive charging power up to 11 kW (AC level)
Efficiency (grid → battery) over 90 % (despite 12–18 cm air gap)
System frequency 85 kHz / 2 kV (LC tank circuit)
Floor plate (L×W×H) 117 × 78 × 6 cm, approx. 50 kg
Alignment tolerance up to 10 cm offset between the coils
Charging time equivalent to that of an 11 kW wallbox
Installation Garage, carport, outdoors — weatherproof, CE & UL
Certifications CE, UL; robustness testing among others by TÜV Süd

Context: charging power and time with wireless charging are equivalent to those of an 11 kW wallbox — that is, the classic home AC charging, just without the cable (more on charging types & charging time). Inductive charging is therefore a replacement for home AC charging — not for HPC fast charging on long trips. The Cayenne Electric also still charges via the standard outlet at up to 400 kW at high-power chargers, for example at every Porsche Charging Lounge.

Safety in detail

  • Foreign-object detection: metal objects (e.g. keys) are detected and prevented from heating up under the floor plate as they would on an induction cooktop.
  • Living-object detection: motion sensors stop the charging session in an emergency — people or pets that get between the vehicle and the plate.
  • EMV limits: the contactless system stays well below them; the magnetic flux is deliberately "steered" in the direction of the vehicle using ferrites and shielding plates.

What does this mean for your charging behavior?

Porsche itself expects that around 75 % of the charging sessions of an e-Cayenne happen at home — for an inductive charging spot, this is exactly the ideal combination. For long distances, however, the classic fast-charging infrastructure with HPC corridors remains the decisive factor.

If you want to use this technology in everyday life: with the Cayenne Electric, it is now available as an option — as the "Porsche Wireless Charging" retrofit for the vehicle plus the corresponding floor plate.

Future plans: inductive charging + auto-parking

Porsche is working on the combination of autonomous parking and wireless charging. The goal: the vehicle parks itself onto the plate, starts the charging session, and gets ready for the next trip — fully charged, without anyone having had to put a cable in their hands.

For LadeGuide readers

Inductive charging makes the home charging spot more convenient, but it does not change the fact that for everyday driving you will still need public charging infrastructure — especially on HPC corridors and at heavily used stations. LadeGuide helps you to keep an overview of the right charging technology and the current charging tariffs, all you have to do in the garage is simply park the car.
